Peter Thiel invests $76 million in Argentine oil firm Vista

Tech billionaire Peter Thiel, through his Thiel Macro LLC hedge fund, has acquired a 1% stake in Vista Energy, a major oil exporter operating in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, the investment is valued at approximately $76 million and represents the fund’s second-largest position, following Amazon.

Vista, founded by Miguel Galuccio, is a key player in Vaca Muerta, which holds the world’s second-largest shale gas and fourth-largest shale oil reserves. The company has seen significant growth, producing roughly 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The investment aligns with Thiel’s interest in the intersection of energy and artificial intelligence, as the massive power requirements for AI data centers drive demand for reliable energy sources.

Thiel’s financial move follows recent personal and political engagements in Argentina, including a meeting with President Javier Milei to discuss economic policies and wealth taxes. The investment occurs as Argentina seeks to leverage its energy resources to attract international capital and expand export capacity through new infrastructure projects.
