Peter Thiel criticizes Germany's lack of scalable business growth
Investor Peter Thiel has criticized the German economic model, suggesting the country suffers from a ‘fear of success’ that prevents companies from scaling into global giants. During a conversation with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner in Berlin, Thiel noted a significant lack of new wealth creation among Germany's youngest billionaires.
Thiel presented a comparison between the 50 wealthiest individuals in Germany and the United States. He observed that among the 20 wealthiest Germans born in 1965 or later, all inherited their fortunes. In contrast, out of 12 Americans in the same age bracket among the top 50, nine built their own wealth.
Thiel argued that while Germany historically excelled at creating large companies, something has changed since 1995. He emphasized that self-made entrepreneurs in the U.S. create thousands of jobs and additional millionaires within their ecosystems, a phenomenon he claims is missing in the current German landscape of industrial conglomerates and specialized medium-sized companies.
