Peter Todd to lead MARA Foundation’s Slipstream service

Bitcoin developer Peter Todd has joined the MARA Foundation as the lead maintainer of Slipstream, a private transaction-submission service. Slipstream allows users to bypass Bitcoin’s public peer-to-peer relay network by submitting transactions directly to the MARA Pool. This method prevents transactions from appearing in the public mempool before they are confirmed.

The service has been utilized for various technical research purposes, including quantum-resistant transaction studies, large Ordinals inscriptions, and Binohash experiments. Notably, Slipstream was used as a security measure during the recent Coldcard firmware vulnerability; the MARA Foundation reported that over 9,000 BTC (with some estimates reaching 10,000 BTC) were moved from affected wallets using this private channel to limit exposure.

While the private submission model offers enhanced privacy and a way to handle non-standard transactions that might be blocked by standard relay policies, it also introduces centralization concerns. Bitcoin Core developers have noted that such private paths could potentially impact mining decentralization by concentrating transaction flow through specific operators.
