Peter V’landys defends NRL salary cap rules amid PNG Chiefs dispute
NRL Chairman Peter V’landys has defended the league’s enforcement of salary cap rules following a dispute regarding the pursuit of player Hudson Young by the PNG Chiefs. The NRL determined that Young’s market value is $1 million, leaving the Chiefs $50,000 short of the required amount after their initial $950,000 offer was rejected.
NRL regulations mandate that players cannot be signed for below their determined market value, a figure set by the salary cap auditor. V’landys clarified that this is not a new course correction but a standard enforcement of existing rules, asserting that PNG’s tax-free concessions will not allow them to build an unfair or supercharged roster.
Young has consulted with the Rugby League Players Association and is expected to decide his future after November 1. The situation has drawn attention to the signing power of the PNG franchise, which has already secured several high-profile players including Jarome Luai and Zac Lomax.
