Peter V’landys to become NRL executive chairman

Peter V’landys has received unanimous support from NRL club chairs and state leagues to become the league’s first executive chairman. The appointment is expected to be officially approved at an upcoming Australian Rugby League Commission board meeting on Wednesday.

V’landys will serve an initial three-year term. To manage the unprecedented level of control this role provides, governance guardrails have been proposed, including the appointment of a lead independent director to resolve potential disputes between V’landys and the clubs or states. Potential candidates for this role include commissioners Peter Beattie and Gary Weiss.

Upon assuming the position, V’landys will conclude his 22-year tenure as CEO of Racing NSW. The transition utilizes clause 53 of the current constitution to create the new position without requiring a formal constitutional amendment, a move that may face future legal scrutiny.
