Peter V’landys to become NRL's first Executive Chairman

Peter V’landys is set to become the first Executive Chairman of the National Rugby League (NRL) following unanimous support from NRL clubs and state bodies. The new role combines his current position as Chairman with the chief executive duties previously held by Andrew Abdo.

The decision was reached during a meeting of club and state leaders on Saturday. A formal appointment is expected to be approved at an Australian Rugby League Commission board meeting this Wednesday. V’landys is anticipated to sign a contract lasting three years and four months, while also stepping down from his role as chief executive of Racing NSW.

While some observers have raised questions regarding the concentration of power in this combined role, club leaders such as South Sydney Rabbitohs chair Nick Pappas have expressed support, noting that discussions regarding governance guardrails are ongoing. Other supporters, including Roosters chairman Nick Politis, credited V’landys with stabilizing the sport during the COVID-19 pandemic and securing major broadcasting agreements.
