Peter Wendl explains challenges of long-distance relationship reunions
Peter Wendl, a relationship and family therapist researching at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, explains why long-distance couples often experience tension during reunions.
Wendl notes that after long periods of separation, partners may feel like strangers or experience friction due to the limited time available and the different daily realities they have inhabited. He suggests that the traveling partner may also be more irritable due to travel exhaustion.
To mitigate these issues, Wendl recommends allowing at least one day for readjustment and avoiding over-scheduling the reunion with social activities, instead prioritizing downtime and spontaneous everyday moments.
