Petermann Glacier detaches massive 76 sq km ice island
A massive ice island measuring approximately 76.4 square kilometers detached from the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland on August 4, 2026. The event represents the largest Arctic calving event since 2020 and the most significant floating ice loss in Greenland since 2012.
The tabular iceberg, which may reach a thickness of 150 meters, has a surface area comparable to Manhattan Island. Researchers from an international group, including the University of Ottawa, the University of Stirling, and the European Space Agency, had been monitoring the glacier's ice tongue since 2019. Satellite imagery from the Sentinel-1 mission showed structural weakening along the centerline of the ice tongue just prior to the detachment.
Glaciologists noted that the break was anticipated due to years of documented expanding fractures and instability. The formation of this large ice mass provides scientists with a rare opportunity to study the life cycle, movement, and eventual fragmentation of major Arctic ice structures.
