Petermann Glacier ice island breaks off Greenland coast
A massive ice island covering 76.4 square kilometers has broken off from the Petermann Glacier off the coast of Greenland. The ice block, which is up to 150 meters thick, is roughly the size of Manhattan and represents one of the most significant Arctic calving events in recent years.
Researchers from the University of Ottawa and the University of Stirling have been monitoring the glacier since 2019. Satellite data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 mission showed significant weakening along the centerline of the ice tongue on August 3, just one day before the complete detachment occurred on August 4. Scientists noted that while the break was “remarkable,” the instability had been anticipated for years.
Experts warn that further calving is likely. Two additional large ice blocks, estimated at 94 and 84 square kilometers, are currently unstable. If these break away, the Petermann Glacier’s floating ice tongue could lose approximately 254 square kilometers, or about 22 percent of its previous surface area.
Beyond scientific interest, the event raises maritime safety concerns. Environment and Climate Change Canada noted that these thick ice masses can drift for years, eventually breaking into smaller, harder-to-track fragments that pose risks to shipping and offshore operations in Greenlandic waters.
