Petermann Glacier iceberg calving marks largest Arctic event since 2020

A massive iceberg, covering more than 76 square kilometers, has broken off from the Petermann Glacier off the northwest coast of Greenland. This event marks the largest calving of an Arctic glacier since 2020.

According to NASA and recent studies, the iceberg drifted through the Petermann Fjord toward the Nares Strait, traveling at speeds of approximately three kilometers per day. In late August, the iceberg collided with the small Joe Island. Researchers noted that the iceberg remained largely intact despite the collision, an outcome that surprised the scientific community.

Scientists are continuing to monitor the iceberg to see if the impact with the island causes subsequent cracking or splitting. Large cracks were observed in the ice prior to the calving, and researchers suggest these could potentially produce two additional ice islands measuring approximately 94 and 84 square kilometers. The iceberg's long-term stability remains uncertain due to the effects of wind, tides, currents, and meltwater.
