Petermann Glacier loses massive 76-square-kilometer ice section

A massive section of the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland has broken away from the main ice body. Satellite data from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 mission confirmed that on August 4, 2026, an ice area measuring approximately 76 square kilometers (roughly 29 square miles) detached from the floating ice tongue.

The newly formed tabular iceberg is estimated to be up to 150 meters thick. Researchers monitoring the glacier through the ESA-funded ARCTEX project noted that the calving event was preceded by rapid crack propagation, which was observed in near real-time using radar interferometry.

Scientists from the University of Ottawa and the University of Leeds stated that while this specific breakup was expected based on years of monitoring, the speed of the changes is remarkable. The event represents one of the most significant ice losses at the Petermann Glacier since 2020, and researchers warn that further large-scale ice losses may follow.
