Petit Futé seeks renewal as travel guide market contracts

The French travel‑guide publisher Petit Futé, marking its 50th anniversary, is overhauling its product range amid a sharp decline in the guide market. The company, which covers more than 300 destinations worldwide, publishes French guides annually and keeps classic world titles such as London, Rome and New York on a yearly cycle, while less‑visited locations are updated every two to three years.

Petit Futé relies on a network of roughly 600 destination‑based authors. In Paris, eight editorial assistants each manage 35‑40 editions, and a team of five finalises maps, illustrations, photographs and printing. The publisher is introducing new formats and collections to adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence and social media.

Industry data from Livres Hebdo show the travel‑guide market fell 18 % in volume by the end of May, with sales down 9.7 % in 2025 after a 6.3 % drop in 2024. The publisher hopes the refreshed offerings will stem the downturn.
