Petit Palais hosts major Eva Gonzalès retrospective in Paris
The Petit Palais in Paris is hosting a major retrospective dedicated to the artist Eva Gonzalès (1847-1883), titled ‘Éva Gonzalès. Parcours d’une artiste libre’. The exhibition, which runs until January 24, 2027, features nearly one hundred paintings, pastels, and engravings.
The exhibition aims to re-evaluate Gonzalès beyond her historical reputation as the ‘sole pupil of Manet’. It seeks to highlight her unique artistic modernity, characterized by an interiority and focus on quiet, contemplative moments. Works in the collection are sourced from various international institutions, including London, Chicago, Denver, Bremen, and the Musée d'Orsay.
Prince Albert II of Monaco recently visited the exhibition alongside Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire. The Prince’s visit highlights the artist's Monégasque origins, stemming from a Spanish lineage established in Monaco in the early 17th century. The Princely Collections are significant contributors to the exhibition, and a portion of the works will be presented at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in the spring of 2027.
