Petition seeks government review of Multi Academy Trust policies
A petition has been launched calling for a government review into the resourcing and behaviour policies of Multi Academy Trusts across the United Kingdom. The movement follows significant criticism directed at the Athena Learning Trust, particularly regarding its management of Launceston College in Cornwall.
Parents, staff, and students raised concerns over the trust’s approach to discipline and teaching, with some critics comparing the school environments to prisons. Specific allegations include the mistreatment of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and the loss of significant instructional time due to extended periods of ‘reflection’ used as a disciplinary measure.
While the Athena Learning Trust announced it would dissolve and transfer its schools to an alternative trust to improve long-term outcomes, the petition, established by Tatjana Balsdon, seeks broader systemic oversight to prevent similar issues in other trusts.
