Petr Wolf sentenced to one year in prison for fleeing to Paraguay
Former Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) MP Petr Wolf has been sentenced to one year in prison by the District Court in Ostrava for evading a six-year sentence related to subsidy fraud by fleeing to Paraguay.
Wolf pleaded guilty to obstructing the execution of an official decision and being expelled from the country. He expressed regret for his actions, claiming he feared for his life at the time of his departure. The judge noted the remorse with reservations, stating he left it to the defendant's conscience whether the regret was sincere.
The original fraud case dates back to 2012, involving the misuse of an 11 million CZK state subsidy from the Ministry of the Environment for two projects. While Wolf had previously been sentenced to six years in prison and a 5 million CZK fine, he fled to avoid serving the term and was eventually detained in Paraguay in 2024.
Wolf's wife, Hana, also received a suspended sentence and a fine in connection with the original fraud. The court's ruling is final, as both Wolf and the state prosecutor waived their right to appeal.
