Petralia Soprana begins restoration of Santa Maria di Loreto spires

Restoration works have commenced on the maiolica-covered spires of the Santa Maria di Loreto church in Petralia Soprana. The project, drafted by the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage of Palermo, aims to halt degradation and structural instability in these iconic architectural elements.

The intervention is funded with 143,500 euros and will be carried out by Scancarello srl. The works are expected to be completed within 180 days of delivery. The spires are characterized by 'scarpuzze'—traditional glazed earthenware elements arranged in concentric bands—which serve both decorative and self-supporting functions.

The first phase involves securing the spire using Georadar technology to identify internal voids or detachments. This will be followed by a three-dimensional laser scan to catalog the ceramic elements by shape, color, and size. Intact pieces will be cleaned and reinstalled, while irreparable elements will be replaced using traditional artisanal techniques. The project also includes waterproofing and sealing vulnerable points to ensure long-term preservation.
