Petrer council reclassifies historic centre plot for affordable housing

The municipal council of Petrer, Spain, approved a change to the urban land‑use classification of a vacant parcel in the Plaza de las Almas. Previously designated as a green zone, the site will now be eligible for public or protected housing development. Urban Planning councillor David Morcillo noted that the three‑storey building could contain about six affordable homes, with the ground floor reserved for possible administrative or public‑service use.

The reclassification is a preparatory step, not an immediate construction order, and fits into the town’s broader effort to revive its historic centre and expand affordable housing. Since 2021, Petrer’s subsidy programme has assisted more than 65 families, allocating roughly €800,000 in funding, and the new plot adds further land for future projects in partnership with regional and national authorities.
