Petrobras discovers hydrocarbons in Foz do Amazonas basin

Petrobras has announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Morpho exploratory well, located in the Foz do Amazonas basin within Brazil’s Equatorial Margin. The well is situated approximately 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá at a water depth of 2,886 meters.

Petrobras President Magda Chambriard confirmed the presence of oil through samples, describing the find as a highly relevant new frontier for Brazil. While the discovery is significant, the company noted that the commercial viability and total volume of the reserves have not yet been determined. Further drilling is required to reach the base of the well and to conduct delimitation drilling.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit the Petrobras drillship in Oiapoque to observe the operations. The government views the Equatorial Margin as a strategic area to replenish national oil reserves and support the energy transition. However, the project remains controversial; environmental organizations have raised concerns regarding the potential impact on the region's high biodiversity.

Ibama granted the necessary exploration licenses in October 2025 following a technical review of contingency plans. Petrobras intends to drill up to three additional wells in the area, pending further regulatory approvals.
