Petrobras contracts Halliburton for Latin American carbon capture pilot

Petrobras has contracted Halliburton Produtos Ltda to drill and complete four onshore wells at the Barra do Furado Station in Quissamã, Rio de Janeiro. This work serves as the foundation for the São Tomé CCS Pilot Project, which is the first initiative in Latin America designed to capture, transport, and store industrial CO2 in a saline reservoir.

The well configuration includes one vertical injector well and three directional monitoring wells. To manage the corrosive nature of pressurized carbon dioxide, the construction will utilize specialized CO2-resistant materials. The project aims to capture up to 100,000 tons of CO2 per year over a three-year period.

Infrastructure work is expected to be completed by 2028, with the operational phase of CO2 injection scheduled to begin in 2029. Following three years of injection, the project will enter a three-year monitoring phase. This Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) project is part of Petrobras’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
