Petrobras discovers second oil interval in Amapá offshore well FAST-MOVING

Petrobras has announced a second oil discovery at the Morpho well (1-BRSA-1405-APS) located in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, part of Brazil’s Equatorial Margin. The discovery was made by drilling into deeper sections of the well, which is situated in ultra-deep waters at a depth of 2,886 meters, approximately 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá.

The company identified the new oil-bearing interval through electrical logs, rock indications, and fluid samples. While laboratory analyses are ongoing to determine the specific properties of this new find, Petrobras noted that the oil discovered in a previous finding in August 2026 was confirmed to be of good quality. The company intends to complete the drilling of the Morpho well to further evaluate the identified formations.

This exploration is part of Petrobras’ long-term strategy to replenish its oil and gas reserves as production in the pre-salt regions is expected to decline in the coming decade. The Equatorial Margin is considered a strategic new frontier, often compared to the highly productive basins in Guyana and Suriname. However, the project faces environmental scrutiny due to its proximity to the Amazon River mouth, with activists warning of potential risks to local ecosystems.
