Petrobras expands oil exploration and carbon capture projects in Brazil

Petrobras is advancing both fossil fuel exploration and carbon management initiatives in Brazil. In the Foz do Amazonas basin, the company has discovered hydrocarbons at the FZA-M-59 exploratory well. Following this discovery, Petrobras has requested authorization from Ibama to drill three additional exploratory wells—Manga, PAD Morpho, and Crotalus—to expand activity in the Equatorial Margin. While government officials have celebrated the discovery as a new energy frontier, environmental groups warn that finding oil does not mitigate climate risks or reduce fossil fuel dependency.

Simultaneously, Petrobras is preparing a pioneering carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Barra do Furado Station in Quissamã. The project aims to capture, transport, and store up to 100,000 tons of CO2 per year by injecting it into deep saline reservoirs. Expected to be completed by 2028 with operations starting in 2029, this initiative would be the first in Latin America to integrate industrial capture, pipeline transport, and subsoil storage within a single structure.
