Petrobras targets Equatorial Margin with US$ 2.5 billion investment
Petrobras is positioning the Brazilian Equatorial Margin as a major new energy frontier following the discovery of high-quality light oil in the Morpho well, located in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. The company's 2026-2030 business plan allocates US$ 2.5 billion for the exploration of 15 new wells in the region, representing a significant portion of its total exploration budget.
Executives, including Petrobras President Magda Chambriard, noted that the discovered oil is lighter than the oil found in the pre-salt layers, which could increase its commercial value and ease refinery processing. If the potential is confirmed, the region could provide at least 40 years of continued oil production, helping to offset the expected decline of pre-salt reserves starting in the mid-2030s.
As exploration intensifies, interest from international players is growing. The Chinese firm CNOOC has requested access to administrative processes from IBAMA regarding Block 59. Meanwhile, local industry leaders in Pará are emphasizing the need to prepare regional infrastructure and workforce to capitalize on the emerging oil and gas supply chain. Petrobras currently awaits environmental licensing from IBAMA to proceed with further drilling activities.
