Petrobras reduces carbon intensity of sustainable aviation fuel
Petrobras has achieved a significant reduction in the carbon intensity of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) in Rio de Janeiro. Following an international audit and recertification under the ISCC CORSIA standard, the company confirmed improvements in the environmental performance of its fuel.
The reduction was driven by enhanced management of hydrogen sources used in production. Specifically, the carbon intensity of the hydrogen employed in the process decreased by 29%. This improvement directly impacted the SAF produced from corn oil, resulting in a 23.8% reduction in its overall carbon intensity.
William França, Director of Industrial Processes and Products at Petrobras, stated that the achievement demonstrates that emission reductions depend not only on certified raw materials but also on continuous process improvements to lower the carbon footprint of production inputs. The company aims to use these advancements to meet future regulatory requirements and expand its presence in renewable and low-carbon fuel markets.
