Strait of Hormuz tensions drive oil price spikes and energy forecast hikes

Oil prices are rising amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and a diplomatic impasse between the United States and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping traffic through the vital waterway has dropped significantly, with only eight ships passing through on a recent Monday compared to a pre-war average of 120. Iran has stated the strait will remain closed until U.S. demands are met or until the end of Donald Trump's term in 2029.

In response to these supply risks, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has raised its 2026 Brent crude oil price forecast to $87 per barrel and increased its retail gasoline forecast to an average of $3.78 per gallon for this year. Brent crude prices have shown volatility, briefly exceeding $90 per barrel.

Separately, major oil companies have reported strong financial results. Petrobras announced a second-quarter net profit of $10.4 billion, driven by record production and high oil prices. Argentina's YPF also reported record results, with a second-quarter net profit of $1.205 billion, bolstered by increased shale oil production and improved refining margins.
