Petrodollar system faces strain amid Iran conflict risks

The petrodollar system, which has supported the US dollar and US government debt for over 50 years, faces potential instability due to tensions involving Iran. The system relies on a strategic arrangement where the United States provides military protection to Gulf monarchies, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar.

In exchange for this protection, these nations price much of their oil in US dollars and reinvest their oil revenues into US financial assets, such as Treasuries. This cycle creates global demand for the dollar and helps finance US deficits. However, the threat of conflict with Iran may undermine this arrangement if Gulf nations conclude that the US can no longer effectively protect their oil infrastructure, shipping lanes, and regimes.
