Petrokemija chemical plant fire in Kutina brought under control

A large fire broke out at the Petrokemija chemical plant in Kutina on Wednesday afternoon, involving a rubber conveyor belt within the factory grounds. The fire was reported at approximately 3:09 PM and was brought under control by 4:45 PM. No injuries were reported, and firefighters successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the main production facilities.

Emergency response efforts involved over 30 firefighters and 15 vehicles from various units, including Kutina, Sisak, Novska, Strušec, Lipovljane, and Garešnica. While the fire was localized, thick black smoke was observed rising from the site.

Because Petrokemija is a major producer of mineral fertilizers and handles high-risk chemicals such as ammonia and nitric acid, the incident has raised concerns regarding environmental safety. Questions have been raised about whether any hazardous waste was involved in the combustion, as the facility manages multiple types of production and external hazardous waste. Authorities and the company face calls to provide detailed information regarding the specific materials burned and the resulting air quality.
