Sicily crime crackdown: Mafia arrests and fatal stabbing investigations
Authorities in Sicily have arrested two individuals from Marsala as part of an investigation into a Cosa Nostra criminal organization operating in Petrosino. The suspects, who were minors at the time of the offenses, face charges including drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms with filed-off serial numbers, and participation in an armed mafia association. Investigators report the seizure of over 1.3 kilograms of cocaine and 130 grams of crack cocaine.
In a separate legal matter, a 15-year-old Italian national remains in a juvenile detention center in Malta. Originally arrested following a false bomb alarm at his school, the investigation expanded to include allegations of involvement with the ‘764’ criminal network, involving charges of criminal association and the distribution of illegal material. A hearing regarding his detention was postponed to August 26 for procedural reasons.
Additionally, three suspects, including two minors, remain in custody following the fatal stabbing of Vito Genovese in the Zen district of Palermo. The incident, which occurred during an attempted break-in, resulted in the victim being struck with a helmet and a screwdriver. While the suspects claimed self-defense, judges maintained their detention citing the gravity of the crime and the risk of evidence tampering.
