Petteri Orpo expects fuel price agreement next week
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the government is close to reaching an agreement on measures to lower fuel prices, with a resolution expected within the coming week. Speaking at a National Coalition Party meeting, Orpo urged realism regarding the government's ability to influence prices, noting that available funds and maneuvering room are limited. He attributed rising fuel costs primarily to external factors, specifically the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Orpo also addressed fiscal policy, emphasizing the National Coalition Party's strict commitment to the debt brake. The agreement aims to adjust public finances by 8–11 billion euros by 2031. Orpo warned that deviating from this commitment could jeopardize Finland's credit rating and lead to increased interest costs. He expressed confusion over other parties that have moved away from the agreed-upon fiscal targets.
