Peugeot automotive history: The 604 Diesel Turbo and 504 legacy

Historical reviews and listings highlight the legacy of Peugeot vehicles. In 1979, the Peugeot 604 Diesel Turbo represented a significant advancement for the French luxury segment by introducing a turbo diesel engine to passenger cars, a technology previously reserved for heavy machinery and specialized vehicles.

While the 604 Diesel Turbo offered a smooth and quiet ride with moderate fuel consumption, contemporary tests noted drawbacks such as vibrations at idle and external engine noise.

Additionally, the Peugeot 504, designed by Aldo Brovarone at Pininfarina, remains a notable classic. Recognized as the 1969 European Car of the Year, the 504 was known for its mechanical durability, earning the nickname ‘workhorse of Africa’ from the Los Angeles Times. A 1973 model with an 1800 cm³ petrol engine is currently listed for sale in Poland.
