Pew Research study shows 27% of Americans struggle to pay monthly bills
A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in late August 2026 reveals that 27% of American adults are unable to pay all of their monthly bills, making only partial payments. This figure represents a slight increase from the 24% reported during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The study, which surveyed more than 5,000 adults, found that 60% of respondents feel they lack sufficient income to maintain their desired lifestyle, and 53% do not have enough emergency savings to cover three months of expenses. Additionally, 44% of Americans reported difficulty paying for at least one basic necessity, such as rent, mortgage, or transportation, within the past year.
Financial concerns are widespread, with 32% of those surveyed reporting daily worries regarding debt and healthcare costs. To manage finances, 70% of US adults reported cutting back on discretionary spending, such as entertainment and dining out, while 54% stated they have been unable to save money for the future.
