PFAS and mineral oil contamination found at Leo Baekelandlaan site
Soil contamination involving PFAS, TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), and mineral oils has been identified at the site of Dilissen Logistics on Leo Baekelandlaan. An exploratory soil study, confirmed by the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM), revealed that the mineral oil levels near above-ground fuel storage exceed remediation standards.
The PFAS and TFA contamination in the groundwater is linked to historical galvanizing activities conducted by a wire drawing mill between 1995 and 2012. OVAM has granted the current owner an exemption from investigation and remediation obligations for the PFAS contamination, as it is attributed to these former activities rather than current operations.
Precautionary measures have been established for residents within a 500-meter safety zone. Approximately 210 affected property owners have been notified. Recommended ‘no regret’ measures to limit exposure include avoiding the use of well water, limiting the consumption of eggs from own chickens, and thoroughly washing homegrown fruits and vegetables.
