PFAS breakthrough: new degradation insight and portable water sensor unveiled

Researchers have identified a new approach to break down per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chemicals known for their extreme stability and persistence in the environment and human body. The discovery could reshape strategies for remediating contaminated sites and reducing long‑term exposure.

Separately, a team at Griffith University has developed a portable sensor that detects PFAS in water on site. The device uses a molecularly imprinted polyaniline‑functionalized lateral‑flow membrane to provide rapid, highly sensitive, and selective measurements, eliminating the need for costly laboratory analysis. Together, these advances aim to improve both the monitoring and removal of “forever chemicals” from water supplies.

If widely adopted, the new degradation method and on‑site testing technology could enhance environmental protection efforts and inform regulatory actions on PFAS contamination worldwide.
