PFAS contamination drives German soil research and Swiss groundwater limit easing
In the German state of Baden-Württemberg, researchers from the University of Stuttgart are testing new methods to reduce PFAS, the persistent “forever chemicals,” in soils and groundwater across a 127‑square‑kilometre area contaminated by PFAS‑laden compost. The work follows findings that the chemicals are widespread in the region.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) has raised the permissible PFAS concentration in groundwater from 50 ng TEQ/L to 200 ng TEQ/L, citing the sheer number of polluted sites that would otherwise require remediation. The adjustment aims to make cleanup efforts feasible while still protecting water quality.
Both developments reflect growing recognition across Central Europe of the scale of PFAS pollution and the challenge of managing remediation under existing regulatory frameworks.
