PFAS contamination found in 60% of analyzed French eggs
An investigation by Radio France and ICI has revealed that 60% of analyzed egg samples in France contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’. Out of 91 eggs collected from various communes across the country, 52 tested positive for these substances.
Laboratory analysis by Labocéa found that 23 of the samples exceeded quality standards, with some samples showing ‘extremely high’ levels and others showing significant exceedances. The study specifically targeted four substances: PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, and PFHxS. In the Haute-Garonne region, contamination was detected in Marignac-Laspeyres and Martres-Tolosane.
In contrast, samples collected from producers in the Alpes-Maritimes region, specifically in Vence and Peille, showed no traces of the four targeted PFAS. These chemicals are noted for their environmental persistence and potential health risks, including being classified as carcinogenic by international research centers.
