PFAS contamination found in Rhode Island private wells

High levels of PFAS, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’, have been detected in private drinking water wells near Tiverton Fire Department Station 3 in Rhode Island. State environmental officials have linked the contamination to the previous use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) at the station.

During a recent town meeting, residents expressed concerns regarding potential health risks, including increased cancer risks, pregnancy complications, and reduced immune response. Because the contamination affects private wells, homeowners may face significant costs for testing and maintenance.

Town manager Patrick Jones stated that immediate relief is being provided, including the distribution of bottled water and the installation of free water filtration systems by the state. For a long-term solution, the town intends to connect affected homes to a nearby water line, using local funds while awaiting state and federal reimbursement.
