PFAS contamination sites uncovered in the Netherlands as study finds most European medicines could eliminate the pollut
Dutch authorities have identified around sixty locations with severe PFAS contamination that require urgent cleanup, with 57 sites classified as high priority. The first report from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, based on inventories by municipalities and provinces, warns that these sites are likely just the "tip of the iceberg" and that the number of contaminated areas could rise sharply as inventories continue. Cleanup costs have already reached at least €68 million, though this represents only a fraction of the total expected expense, and many companies are refusing access to their lands, hindering investigations.
A separate study by the University of Freiburg’s pharmaceutical institute and Germany’s Federal Environment Agency examined the use of PFAS in medicines. It concluded that in 97 of 111 drugs currently containing PFAS, alternative substances could already be employed, highlighting the potential to reduce public health risks associated with these persistent chemicals.
Both findings underscore growing concerns across Europe about the environmental and health impacts of PFAS, prompting calls for stricter regulations and accelerated substitution in pharmaceutical products.
