PFAS found in Belgian groundwater; Dutch landfill study shows no public health risk

The Openbaar Vlaamse Afvalstoffenmaatschappij (OVAM) reported elevated levels of PFAS in the groundwater at the Bardoel site in Staden, Belgium, after a 2009 fire that used PFAS‑containing foam. Precautionary measures are being applied within a 500 m radius, and residents are advised to avoid using the groundwater for drinking, cooking or irrigation, although there is no immediate health threat.

The municipality of Barneveld, Netherlands, completed supplemental soil investigations at the former Molenveen landfill. Strong contamination was found only in deeper layers of private plots and beneath 0.30 m in the public area, posing no risk to current park use, groundwater or public health. No further remediation is planned, though future construction may require additional assessments.
