PFAS-Free France campaign named Earthshot Prize finalist

The PFAS-Free France campaign has been named a finalist for the 2026 Earthshot Prize in the ‘waste-free world’ category. The initiative, which began in 2022, brings together scientists, politicians, and civil society to combat the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called ‘forever chemicals’ due to their inability to break down in the environment.

This recognition follows legislative progress in France. In February 2025, the French National Assembly approved regulations that began restricting PFAS in specific product groups starting January 1, 2026. These restrictions cover cosmetics, ski waxes, consumer clothing, footwear, and waterproofing products, impacting production, import, export, and marketing.

In a related development, environmental organizations including ClientEarth, Générations Futures, and Notre Affaire à Tous have issued an ultimatum to Groupe SEB, the manufacturer of Tefal products. The groups claim the company’s continued use of PFAS in non-stick cookware is ‘outdated and insufficient’ and fails to meet legal obligations under French corporate responsibility laws. The NGOs have initiated a formal notice process, stating they may pursue legal action if the company does not publicly commit to a phase-out plan within three months.
