PFAS Levels Drop in Seabird Eggs Following North American Regulations
A 55‑year study of northern gannet (Morus bassanus) eggs on Bonaventure Island shows a sharp decline in the concentration of persistent per‑ and poly‑fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid fell about 74%, perfluorooctanoic acid about 40%, and PFHxS roughly 70% compared with peak levels in the 1990s. The downward trend coincides with the introduction of regulatory limits and voluntary curbs by industry in North America, including EPA‑backed agreements instituted in the late 1990s. Researchers stress that PFAS remain highly persistent in the environment and that new compounds continue to emerge, but the findings illustrate that legal restrictions can produce measurable ecological benefits.
