PFAS levels found in blood of Croatian study participants
A European study has revealed the presence of PFAS, often called ‘forever chemicals’, in the blood of all 110 participants tested across nine countries. The findings are particularly concerning for Croatian participants, where 60 percent of those tested showed PFAS levels above reference values, compared to a 25 percent average in the broader tested population.
In Croatia, six out of ten participants had elevated levels of these compounds. Specifically, among participants from Gospić, Knin, and Pula, high levels of four long-chain PFAS compounds were identified. One participant from Gospić reported a combined PFAS level of 7.33 micrograms per liter, exceeding the recommended limit of 6.9 micrograms per liter.
European Parliament MEP Gordan Bosanac and toxicologist Professor Marjorie Van Duursen presented the results, noting that trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) levels in humans were 4.5 times higher than in previous studies. While the small sample size means the study is not representative of the entire population and cannot definitively link exposure to a specific source, experts are calling for urgent EU-wide action and a revision of chemical regulations to protect public health.
