PFAS research shows distinct isomer distribution in food chain as German filters claim 99.99% removal

A University at Buffalo study examined water, fish and bird egg samples and found that the linear isomer of the hazardous PFOS compound dominates in fish‑eating bird eggs (about 90 %), whereas branched isomers are more common in wastewater and fish (over 50 %). The researchers used cyclic ion mobility spectrometry to separate the isomers and concluded that linear PFOS isomers bioaccumulate more readily through the food web. The work, funded by the U.S. NSF and EPA, highlights the need for regulations to differentiate PFAS isomers rather than treating them as a single group.

In Germany, GrünePerlen GmbH introduced Carbonit‑based activated‑carbon block filters that, according to a University of Stuttgart study, can eliminate up to 99.99 % of PFAS from household tap water. The QuickHexaFlow modular system allows easy installation under the sink, and the company also offers complementary reverse‑osmosis units. The technologies respond to tightening regulations and growing public concern about PFAS health risks, providing a proactive barrier against these persistent chemicals in drinking water.
