Pfeifer & Langen sugar refinery failure causes severe odor in Gostyń

Residents of Gostyń, particularly those living near Nad Kanią and Poznańska streets, have reported a severe and unusual stench emanating from the local sugar refinery. While the typical smell of the beet campaign is a known seasonal occurrence, residents describe the current odor as a sharp, chemical-like smell that penetrates homes even with windows closed.

Representatives from Pfeifer & Langen, the company operating the refinery, confirmed that an installation failure occurred recently. The company stated that sugar refinery wastewater with a higher sugar concentration entered the plant's wastewater treatment plant due to the malfunction. Pfeifer & Langen maintains that the failure has not caused an environmental threat and that they are currently in a process of stabilization to clean the wastewater.
