PFI Medan hosts Sumatra disaster photo exhibition

The Pewarta Foto Indonesia (PFI) Medan branch is hosting a photo exhibition titled ‘Prahara Pulau Emas’ at the Plaza Medan Fair from August 19 to August 21, 2026. The exhibition features 140 photographs captured by 45 photographers from across Indonesia.

The collection documents various flood disasters that have impacted regions including North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra. Beyond mere documentation, the exhibition aims to serve as an artistic and academic resource that conveys messages about environmental preservation and the resilience of communities facing natural calamities.

Medan Mayor Rico Waas attended the opening, noting that journalistic photography serves as a powerful medium to evoke empathy and provide hope. He emphasized that while video content is often consumed rapidly, a single photographic frame has the unique ability to make viewers pause and reflect on the deeper realities of human experiences during disasters.
