Pfizer and Novo Nordisk present new obesity drug data at ADA conference
Pfizer released data on an experimental monthly GLP‑1 obesity injection, berobenatide, acquired through its $10 billion purchase of Metsera. The VESPER‑3 trial presented at the American Diabetes Association meeting in New Orleans showed a side‑effect profile similar to Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy, with mean nausea rates of about 38% and vomiting rates of 23.3%. Patients receiving the highest dose every four weeks lost nearly 15% of body weight after 14 months, positioning the drug as a potential first‑once‑a‑month therapy in its class.
At the same conference, Novo Nordisk chief executive Mike Doustdar discussed the broader potential of the company’s GLP‑1 compound semaglutide. He cited research suggesting the drug may protect heart, liver and kidney health and could reduce biological age markers, indicating possible applications in longevity, aesthetics and other chronic‑disease areas. Doustdar’s comments reflect Novo’s strategy to expand beyond obesity and diabetes amid rising competition from rivals such as Eli Lilly.
