Pfizer partners with Chai Discovery to use generative AI in drug research

Pfizer has signed a licensing agreement with AI biotechnology firm Chai Discovery, giving the drugmaker access to the company’s generative‑AI platform, including the Chai‑3 model and a system customized with Pfizer’s proprietary data. The technology is aimed at designing antibodies and other biomolecules, allowing AI to predict and generate molecules with specific biological characteristics and potentially shorten the early stages of drug discovery.

Pfizer executives note that AI could help identify stronger candidates earlier, reducing the time and billions of dollars typically required for drug development, though any AI‑generated leads must still undergo traditional laboratory testing, animal studies, human trials and regulatory approval. Industry veteran Douglas Williams highlighted the growing impact of AI on medicine over the next decade. The partnership reflects a broader industry shift, with other platforms such as Converge Bio, Recursion, Insilico Medicine, Isomorphic Labs and Schrödinger combining AI with experimental feedback to improve target selection, molecule design and candidate ranking.

While AI promises efficiency gains, experts caution that it is a research tool rather than a replacement for scientific judgment, and its ultimate value will depend on how well it integrates into the full drug‑development workflow.
