Pfänder Tunnel implements Section Control speed enforcement

A new Section Control speed enforcement system has been activated in the Pfänder Tunnel in Vorarlberg, Austria. The system monitors average vehicle speeds on a section of the A14 motorway, which connects to the German A96 near Lindau.

Currently, the measurements are conducted only on weekdays between 20:00 and 05:00. This schedule coincides with ongoing renovation work to renew the tunnel's safety systems, which is expected to conclude by the end of October. During these hours, one tunnel tube is closed for construction, forcing traffic into the opposite tube with a reduced speed limit of 60 km/h instead of the usual 100 km/h.

Asfinag, the Austrian motorway operator, stated that while traditional radar may only cause drivers to slow down momentarily, Section Control ensures safety across entire stretches of road by tracking average speeds. Warning signs for the system have been in place since spring, though the official regulation for the enforcement was delayed.
