PGA of America overhauls U.S. Ryder Cup qualifying system

The PGA of America has announced a major overhaul of the U.S. Ryder Cup qualifying system for the 2027 matches. Moving away from a long-standing model based on prize money earned, the new system utilizes a fixed points structure tied to specific tournament performances.

Under the new criteria, the top six players on the U.S. Ryder Cup Points list following the BMW Championship will earn automatic selections. Captain Jim Furyk will then make six captain’s picks during the week of August 30, 2027. The qualifying period will span 31 events, beginning with The American Express in January 2027 and concluding with the BMW Championship in August.

Points are heavily weighted toward major achievements. Winners of the four Major Championships will receive 3,000 points, while the winner of THE PLAYERS Championship will earn 2,850 points. Winners of PGA Tour Signature Events and the two FedEx Cup Playoff events will receive 2,250 points.
