PGA Tour to overhaul postseason with match play format in 2028
The PGA Tour has announced a major overhaul of its postseason structure set to begin in 2028. The current FedEx Cup Playoffs will be replaced by a new system featuring a two-tier structure: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series.
The new season finale will culminate in a two-week Tour Championship that incorporates a match play format. The process will begin with the Championship Series Finale, a 72-hole stroke play event for the top 90 players on the season-long points list. From there, the top 32 players will advance to the Tour Championship. This final stage will consist of a week-long group stage involving eight pools of four players, followed by a second week of knockout-style match play at a different venue.
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp stated the change aims to create a stand-alone competition that commands greater attention from fans. The initiative was developed by the Future Competition Committee, chaired by Tiger Woods. Woods expressed enthusiasm for the move, noting that the conclusion of the season should be worthy of the journey required to reach it.
