PGA Tour announces new championship structure and venue updates

The PGA Tour has announced a new season-ending structure for its Championship Series, set to be implemented in 2028. The model aims to create a more consequential finish, culminating in a two-week Tour Championship featuring match play at rotating venues. The new three-week stretch will begin with the PGA Tour Championship Series Finale, a 72-hole stroke-play event for the top 90 players on the season-long points list. Following this finale, the top 32 players will advance to the Tour Championship.

Separately, PGA of America CEO Terry Clark addressed preparations for the 2027 PGA Championship at PGA Frisco. Noting that iconic venues are earned over time rather than created overnight, Clark highlighted ongoing renovations at Fields Ranch East, the Gil Hanse-designed course. Improvements include leveling certain tee boxes and enhancing fan entrances to prepare for the men’s major championship and subsequent events scheduled through 2034.
