PGA Tour to add Torrey Pines tournament to 2028 Championship Series

The PGA Tour announced that its annual event at Torrey Pines in San Diego will become part of the newly structured Championship Series beginning in 2028. The tournament will be rebranded as The Sentry in 2027 under a fresh title‑sponsorship deal, with its first edition under that name slated for Jan. 27‑30, 2027. The Championship Series is expected to comprise 23‑24 elite events from February through August, including the four majors, The Players Championship, a redesigned postseason and either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup. The Sentry will join the Travelers Championship and a new Sompo‑backed tournament as confirmed regular‑season events, while a parallel Challenger Series of at least 20 tournaments will operate concurrently, allowing players to move between the two tiers via a promotion‑and‑relegation system.

The San Diego Open began in 1952 and has been held at Torrey Pines since 1968. From 2010 to 2026 it was known as the Farmers Insurance Open. The venue has also hosted two U.S. Opens, notably Tiger Woods’ 2008 playoff win over Rocco Mediate. Englishman Justin Rose captured the final Farmers Insurance Open on Feb. 1, posting a tournament‑record 23‑under‑par for a seven‑stroke victory.
